Modak, a sweet dumpling popular in Western and Southern India, is often prepared during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi as it is considered Lord Ganesha’s favorite food. This blog post will guide you through the process of making Modak with and without a mould.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rice Flour
  • 1 cup Jaggery
  • 1 cup Grated Coconut
  • 1/2 tsp Cardamom Powder
  • Water as required
  • Ghee for greasing

Method

Preparing the Filling

  1. In a pan, add jaggery and grated coconut. Cook on a medium flame until the jaggery melts completely.
  2. Add cardamom powder to the mixture and stir well. Cook until the mixture thickens.
  3. Once done, remove from heat and let it cool.

Preparing the Dough

  1. In a pot, boil water with a pinch of salt.
  2. Once the water starts boiling, add rice flour gradually while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  3. Cover the pot and cook on low heat for a couple of minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat and let it cool for a while. Once cool enough to handle, knead it into a smooth dough.

  3. Fill the cavity with prepared filling.
  4. Seal it with a small portion of dough.
  5. Carefully open the mould and remove the Modak.

Making Modak Without Mould

  1. Take a small portion of dough and flatten it with your fingers to form a disc shape.
